SOUTH BERWICK WATER DISTRICT – TECHNICAL MANAGER

Overview

The South Berwick Water District is seeking an experienced, dependable, and motivated Water Distribution Operator to join our team. This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the municipal water distribution and transmission systems to ensure safe and reliable delivery of drinking water to the community.

Position Summary

A Water Distribution Operator is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing the water distribution, transmission, and treatment systems. This includes ensuring the safe and reliable delivery of potable water to residential, commercial, and industrial customers while complying with all local, state, and federal regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor water distribution systems, including pumps, valves, pipelines, treatment plants, hydrants, and storage tanks
  • Perform routine inspections of water lines and equipment to ensure proper function
  • Install, repair, and replace service lines, meters, and hydrants
  • Respond to emergency situations such as main breaks, leaks, and service interruptions
  • Collect water samples and assist with testing to ensure water quality standards are met
  • Read and record meters, gauges, and system data for reporting and compliance purposes
  • Maintain accurate operational logs, maintenance records, and reports
  • Locate and mark underground utilities before excavation
  • Use hand tools, power tools, heavy equipment, and SCADA systems as needed
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures, regulations, and environmental standards
  • Assist with flushing programs, valve exercising, and hydrant maintenance
  • Provide excellent customer service when responding to public inquiries or complaints

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Valid driver’s license
  • State certification as a Water Distribution Operator preferred (Class level dependent on job grade)
  • Knowledge of water distribution systems, hydraulics, and equipment
  • Basic math and recordkeeping skills
  • Ability to read maps, blueprints, and system diagrams

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5 Years prior experience in water utilities, public works, or construction
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems and computerized maintenance systems
  • Confined space and trench safety training
  • Backflow prevention or cross-connection control certification

  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations

Working Conditions

  • Work performed outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Exposure to heavy equipment, chemicals, and confined spaces
  • May require lifting heavy objects (50+ lbs)
  • On-call, weekend, holiday, and overtime work required
  • Must follow strict safety protocols

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods
  • Ability to lift, carry, and operate equipment
  • Manual dexterity to operate tools and machinery
